SIERRA MADRE

IT'S NOT JUST A PRETTY PLACE. IT'S A GREAT PLACE!

About Sierra Madre

The Tongva Indians were the first inhabitants of the San Gabriel Valley. They lived along the San Gabriel River until the Spanish arrived in 1769, bringing them to the missions in Alta California.

After their forced relocation, the Tongva settled at the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. They still live in the San Gabriel Valley and speak Tongva as their native language.

The Tongva were one of the first groups of Native Americans to come into contact with Europeans.

They lived along the coast of what is now Southern California. When the Spanish arrived in 1669, the Tongva people were the most numerous group of Indians in the area, with about 5,000 people.

The missionaries used Tongva when referring to their Native American old neighbors.

However, the Spanish used Gabrielino for their Indian neighbors, referring to the natives as "Gabrielinos". It was not until 1821 that the first missionary translated the name to Tongva, which means "The World."
