San Gabriel

IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK.

San Gabriel

The Tongva Native Americans were the first people to inhabit the area that is now known as San Gabriel. The Tongva were hunter-gatherers and were farmers as well.

They were known for their fine weaving and pottery. They also made baskets from the

bark of the sycamore tree.

In 1769, Father Junípero Serra, a Spanish priest, arrived in California.

He was tasked with building a series of missions in California to convert the native population from their pagan ways to Christianity. Father Serra founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1771.

In 1853, a group of Army Engineers passed by the mission while they were looking for a route for a new railroad.

The group was led by Major William P. Blake, a geologist, who made the trip from Fort Vancouver to San Francisco.

San Gabriel, California is a city located in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It was founded in 1771 by Spanish missionaries as part of a mission to convert the indigenous population to Catholicism. San Gabriel became a center for agriculture and ranching, and was later incorporated as a city in 1913.
